Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), as fans of the “Karate Kid” film series know, has his fair share of foes. In “The Karate Kid Part II,” for example, the youngster encounters Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) in Okinawa, Japan. Chozen harbors a grudge towards Daniel since his uncle, Sato (Danny Kamekona), had a spat with Daniel’s master, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). Chozen seems to enjoy tormenting the West Valley High School student throughout the film, and ultimately dares him to a brutal karate match. Daniel, on the other hand, has better martial arts abilities and wins the battle.

Chozen appears in episode 5 of season 3 of “Cobra Kai.” Daniel bumps meets his ex-girlfriend Kumiko while on vacation in Okinawa, Japan (Tamlyn Tomita). After spending some time reuniting, the former couple decides to go to a bar. Chozen, whom Kumiko had secretly summoned, soon interrupts them. For a long period, neither man speaks to the other. Daniel, on the other hand, notices Kumiko’s eager expression and inquires whether he is married and has children. Chozen tells him flatly that he is neither a spouse nor a parent. Chozen is unresponsive to Daniel’s effort to engage him with a quotation from “Seinfeld.”
“I suppose he’s more of a ‘Friends’ person,” Daniel jokes.
Chozen then offers to buy them another round of drinks, which they decline. Daniel inquired as to why Chozen was spending time with them in the pub when the martial artist was there. The owner of the LaRusso Auto Group gets irritated when Kumiko responds that she “called him.”
“Did you forget about the time we went to war and battled to the death?” That person attempted to murder both you and me! “Daniel says.
“That was a long time ago,” Kumiko says, promising that “Chozen has evolved.” She argues that he and his old adversary “have much to speak about” when he pushes back. She then leaves Daniel alone with Chozen after she excuses herself.
In February 2021, Yuji Okumoto spoke about Chozen.
Kumiko was correct about Chozen, as fans know. He showed in “Cobra Kai” that he is no longer a threat and is now a dedicated karate teacher. Yuji Okumoto addressed his character’s portrayal in the “Karate Kid” spin-off series during a February 2021 interview on the “Cobra Kai Kompanion” podcast. Chozen was supposed to be even less rough around the edges in the program, according to the actor.
“When I first received the screenplay, I had certain ideas that I wanted to share with the authors and creators. “I believe it was written when he was at a better position in his life and was a nicer person,” the actor said. “However, it subsequently offered him no direction to follow after that.” It would have simply been a pretty safe bet. So I was still looking for Chozen’s edge from ‘Karate Kid II.’ I still needed that element of him because I believe we develop and grow as individuals, but there’s still a part of you that’s still there, and I wanted Chozen to have that feeling of danger. I wanted that arc as he softened, so it had that edge.”
